about
-This is a rework from the "Boots, Booze and Tattoos" remastering sessions with Graham Riddle at Wayfarer Sound.. It has been shortened and the sound quality has been enhanced.
***This is not a pro-war song:
The song was inspired by the book, "When Your Number's Up: The Canadian Soldier In The First World War", by Desmond Morton. The song, like the title of the book, was inspired by accounts of expressed solicitude of soldiers who knew, before the fact, that they were going to die in an upcoming battle or attack. If anything, this song serves as a lament for these individuals.
-If you listen closely, you will hear Brian's wedding ring sliding along the strings during his solo, giving a very unique effect.
lyrics
Goodbye, my friends and family,
Goodbye to those across the sea,
Farewell sweet lovely gal of mine,
I'm going up that bloody line,
Chorus:
I'm going up over the top,
And I know my number's up.
The whistle blew like so many times before,
I left the trench, and the Kaiser's bloody war,
So farewell to all those in the line,
We'll meet again on the other side,
Chorus:
I'm going up over the top,
And I know my number's up.
